Delta Dreaming: Road Trips - 1

One of the nice things about our state is the potential for many one-day road trips to interesting places. Today, I join two friends in a visit to St. Charles, Arkansas. This small community on the White River is known for at least three notable attractions:

            1. It is the site where the greatest number of soldiers were killed by a single shot in the Civil War.

            2. It is, unfortunately, the originating site of the greatest number of persons murdered in a single lynching in our nation’s history.

            3. It was the home of Helen Spence, who achieved national fame by going to the courthouse and killing the man who killed her daddy, killing another man for making unwanted advances toward her, and in turn being murdered because she wouldn’t stay put behind prison bars in the infamous Arkansas penal system, all in all an interesting person whose grave site, they say, has finally been located. We’ll see.

Quite a day looms ahead for us. Stay tuned.

Killing a couple of men doesn't make an Arkansas girl all bad.
